NEW ROSS SENIORS
We had a very enjoyable outing to Coollattin Golf Club on Monday, May 20.
Some 36 players made the trip and were thrilled with the summer weather, the course, and the wonderful scenery which surrounds this gem in the Garden County of Ireland.
The azaleas, rhododendrons and other shrubs were in full bloom, giving a kaleidoscope of colour which any artist would love to be able to put on canvas.
The golf itself was a fair test of one’s ability, playing off the white stakes in our favoured Champagne scramble format. As usual, we had a tight finish with only single points separating the first three teams home.
Taking the day’s honours were Joe Farrell (15), J.J. Hoyne (22), Pat Coady (30) and Seán Murphy (30) with a great score of 95 points.
Hot on their heels in second place with 94 points came Mikey Lee (17), Michael Gannon (21), Robert O’Dwyer (28) and Jamesie Murphy (33).
A further point behind and in third place were Michael Kavanagh (20), Jack Fardy (25), Paddy Mahony (26) and Willie Naddy (28). Fourth prize went to Larry Shannon (24), P.J. Farrell (25), Jamesie Wallace (28) and Tom Kent (32) with 90 points.
Many thanks to Johnny Farrell and Liam Glasheen who looked after the entries and the prizes.
Back on home turf last Thursday, we got a nasty taste of Irish weather with a cold northerly wind sweeping the course which made conditions that bit uncomfortable for our 50-plus players.
We had runaway winners with a three-person team taking the spoils. Richie Aylward (16), Seán Murphy (30) and Paddy O’Shea (31) scored 96 points (90+6) to put clear daylight between themselves and the rest of the field.
Second were Mikey Lee (17), Aidan O’Connor (23), Colin Casey (26) and Pat Coady (30) with 88 points. Another three-person team took third prize, as Seamus Bolger (23), Jack Fardy (23) and Pat Traynor (27) carded 84 points (78+6).
Of late players are not signing in on the sheet provided for our two-week cycle. Coming along on the Thursday and not being on the sheet and hoping to be included in the competition is not fair to the starter, Liam Glasheen, as collecting the entry fee from 60-plus players is more than enough to be going on with.
Johnny Farrell will collect the entry fee of €25 for our trip to Faithlegg on Monday, June 17 on Thursday, June 6.
Teams and tee-times for Thursday, May 30: 9 a.m., Johnny Browne, Tony Harford, Willie Naddy, Donie Cody; 9.08 a.m., Joe Farrell, Aidan O’Connor, Colin Casey, Pat Coady; 9.16 a.m., Ger Maher, Patsy Farrell, Larry Shannon, Tom Kent; 9.24 a.m., P.J. Farrell, Paddy Mahony, Tony Wallace, Michael Brennan; 9.32 a.m., Joe Madigan, J.J. Hoyne, Pat Traynor, A.N. Other; 9.40 a.m., Tommy Ryan, Frank Boyle, Michael Long, Paddy Power; 9.48 a.m., Kenny Irwin, Martin Burke, John F. Roche, Oliver Brennan; 9.56 a.m., Danny O’Leary, Seán Ó hUiginn, Robert O’Dwyer, Les Jastrebski; 10.04 a.m., Denis Kirwan, John Kennedy, Peter Aldridge, Aidan Wallace; 10.12 a.m., Martin Murphy, Jamesie Wallace, Liam Glasheen, Fr. Wednesday nine-hole open medal competition: 1, John Farrell, 21 points; 2, Seán Quinn, 21 points; 3, Michael McNulty, holding off Richard McDonald, Darren Willoughby and Paul S. Doyle on countback.
Ballymoney had a good win over Millicent in the Jimmy Bruen Trophy on Saturday, while on Sunday the Junior Cup team took on The Heritage and the All-Ireland fourball team faced Courtown.
The clash versus The Heritage went right down to the wire, with the last match being decided by a birdie on the 18th for a win for the Co. Laois side.
The All-Ireland fourball match versus Courtown was played in torrential rain near the end, and our near neighbours ended up with the win after a tight affair.

Sunday saw Enniscorthy host the Leinster Central qualifier for both the AIG Barton Shield and Senior Foursomes.
Teeing-off at 8.30 a.m., 13 teams faced the starter with the top four qualifying for the Leinster Central quarter-finals on July 6.
The first teams out definitely had the best of the weather, but this in no way takes away from the excellent score posted by the home team with a 142 (two under).
The four qualifying scores were Enniscorthy 142, Mountrath 148, Rosslare 150, and Wexford 156.
The women’s Senior Foursomes saw seven teams battle for four quarter-final places, with constant heavy showers making playing conditions very difficult.
The qualifiers were Wexford 171, Kilkenny 174, New Ross 176, and Enniscorthy 176.
A huge thanks to our course staff for the excellent condition of the course, and also to a number of volunteers who worked tirelessly on a couple of greens during the torrential rain to ensure play could continue.
Enniscorthy defeated Rosslare 3.5 to 0.5 in the Mixed Fourball on Saturday. The team is now through to the Leinster Central quarter-final to be played by June 16 against opponents to be confirmed.
Enniscorthy were very unlucky on Sunday, losing to Waterford 3/2 in the Barton Cup, with two matches going to extra holes. Better luck next year, lads.
