They had been dating about eight months and the Irish Open at Carton House was her first time at a golf tournament. Shane finished fifth that year? She can’t remember. Rory was playing? She can’t remember that either. No, the thing Wendy Lowry remembers most about the day is the thing she went home and told her mother that night.

“All I knew about golf growing up was Pádraig Harrington and Tiger Woods,” she says. “And I remember Shane introducing us and being starstruck: ‘Oh my God! It’s Pádraig Harrington!’”
