Penn State Hires Bruce Lipka As Head Men’s Tennis Coach

Penn State men’s tennis has named Bruce Lipka as its next head coach, it announced Tuesday. Lipka took over the position from Jeff Zinn, who retired at the conclusion of the 2024 season after 13 years with the program.

Lipka has spent 36 coaching tennis and came to Penn State from Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, where he helped the club rank among the top 20 United States country clubs.

“I’m honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to coach the men’s tennis team at Penn State,” Lipka said in a release. “From the first conversation I had with Dr. Kraft, I could feel the energy and the tradition that lives in Happy Valley. I’m full of gratitude to be offered this opportunity to mentor these young men and build a program that fits this great university.”

Lipka is a three-time USPTA Tour Coach of the Year and four-time USPTA Professional of the Year. He was named the Tim Gullickson Tour Coach of the Year in 2023 and PTR Tour Coach of the Year in 2023.

At the collegiate level, Lipka has worked as a volunteer assistant for Maryland and a consultant for USC, Vanderbilt, and Columbia. During his time with each program, the Trojans won five national titles, the Commodores won one national championship, and the Lions won seven Ivy League Championships.

Lipka also served as the head coach at Miami University of Ohio from 1989-96, winning MAC titles in 1994, 1995, and 1996 and earning MAC Coach of the Year distinctions in 1992, 1994, and 1995.
