Some people are just realising why Penneys is called Primark in the UK and the rest of the world.

The fashion retailer is a popular brand on most high streets in many countries across the world, including Ireland. 

However, there’s one distinct difference between the stores – In Ireland it’s called Penneys, while in Northern Ireland, the UK and elsewhere it’s called Primark. 

Shoppers visiting the Republic of Ireland were left shocked after making the discovery that it’s not called Primark over here.

One person wrote on X: “Why is Primark in Ireland called Penneys? Just for giggles?”

Another commented: “Flight delayed about an hour which wasn’t too bad. Was I the last to know that Primark in Ireland is called Penneys?”

There’s a reason behind why our beloved Penneys is called Primark in other countries.

Penneys (or Primark) started out as a single store on Mary Street in Dublin city centre in 1969.

In 1973, it was expanded into mainland Britain, but the Penney name couldn’t be used as American retailer, J. C. Penney, had the right to use the name in the region.

The Primark name was created to solve the problem and, since then, all stores opened around the world have adopted it.
