PGA Tour chiefs told they need Bryson DeChambeau back in LIV Golf warning
Bryson DeChambeau showed the PGA Tour exactly what they missing in North Carolina last weekend, after the LIV Golf star won his second major title at the US Open
The PGA Tour has been told they need to do everything they can to bring back Bryson DeChambeau after the LIV Golf star put on a show on the way to winning the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
DeChambeau played his part in a major championship for the ages, seeing off Rory McIlroy by a single shot in an epic final round in North Carolina. DeChambeau capped off a thrilling final 18 holes with a superb up-and-down for par to get his hands on the US Open crown for a second time.
Having previously been golf’s pantomime villain, DeChambeau proved to be a fan favourite throughout the week at Pinehurst, and showing his appreciation, the 30-year-old celebrated with the North Carolina crowd when being handed the title.
DeChambeau paraded the U.S. trophy title through the spectators around the 18th green, allowing those in attendance to get a touch of the iconic piece of silverware as a way of saying thank you. DeChambeau’s growing popularity will no doubt be a plus for LIV Golf too, as they continue their tussle with the PGA Tour at the top of the pro golf pyramid.
The US Open champion is of course banned from competing on the PGA Tour following his Saudi switch, but according to renowned golf agent Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler – whose former clients include the likes of McIlroy and Lee Westwood – the Tour needs to be recalling the LIV star back onto their circuit.
Chandler told Mirror Sports : “I would have thought on Monday that the powers that be on the PGA Tour are thinking ‘we better get [DeChambeau] back in our tournaments’ because he is the biggest draw in golf by quite a way.” DeChambeau himself openly admitted that public opinion has changed massively in recent years.
Whilst many within the sport have seen their legacies tarnished in the eyes of golf fans since joining LIV, DeChambeau’s appears to have only improved. Chandler believes the former Tour star’s decision to sign with Greg Norman and co has only benefited him in the eyes of the public.
“I think because of the relaxed nature of LIV Golf, they can become themselves,” the agent added. “Rather than putting on this facade that they have all got that they are in a bubble. He is proving that you can just be yourself.” Hailing DeChambeau’s crowd celebrations too, Chandler went on: “It was just amazing.
“I couldn’t help thinking how many kids would be watching thinking, ‘I am going to have a go at this’. Whoever thought of him running around with the trophy, whether it was him or the people around him, was a genius. Everybody could have done it for the last 20 years and nobody did. Nobody got the people involved like he did. It was unbelievable.”
