Plans green lit for apartments over pub in Ballincollig 

Plans for six new apartments over a pub in Ballincollig have been approved.

Last September applicant John Sheehan submitted the plans with Cork City Council seeking permission for the development of the units at ‘Building K’, a two-storey corner building bound by Main Street, High Street, and Murphy’s Road.

The application proposed the change of use of the first floor from restaurant unit to residential use in order to provide the six new one-bed apartments.

The restaurant unit was formerly Tung Sing which closed at the location last year.

Arty’s Bar, owned by publican Benny McCabe, operates on the ground floor of the premises. It has been trading at the location since late 2019.

A planning statement submitted with the application contended that residential use at first floor level would be viable.

“The vacant restaurant unit on the first floor of the building ceased business at the beginning of 2023.

“In the recent past, three different restaurants established their business on the same first floor unit, and all were unsuccessful.

“The only viable sustainable use for this premises is now residential, particular in light of the current housing crisis.”

It added that the site is located “in a prime position, close to services, schools, shopping centres, cafes, and other amenities”.

Cork City Council has approved the planning application subject to 14 routine conditions.
