Popular Irish pub’s 23K makeover unveiled as photos show iconic sign change
A popular Galway pub has had a major makeover this week as new signage is unveiled with a 23-karat detail.
The former Richardsons pub in Eyre Square changed hands several months ago to be renamed ‘Jack J Foleys’ and now has a fresh lick of paint to continue the rebrand.
The signs were hand painted with 23.5 gold leaf as new owners the O’Connor family take the reigns.

Responsible for the signage was Mike Kenny Signs, who commended the pub on their new look.
In a post on social media he said: “Great to see all of the signs installed on the new Jack J. Foleys Pub on Eyre Sq. 23.5K Gold Leaf & Handpainted lettering, best of luck to the O’Connor family on their new venture in the west! #brushisbest”.
Richardson’s had been an institution in Galway city welcoming locals and tourists alike for some refreshing pints down through the decades.
In July 2023, the Richardson family announced their retirement from the business.
In a post on Facebook, The former owners said a fond farewell to the pub and thanked the legion of loyal customers that supported them over the years.
The post read: “As life will go on, so too, No 1 will be on the corner of Eyre Square. After nearly 70 years as proprietors of this establishment, we The Richardsons announce our retirement. We would like to thank the people who have supported us down the generations – our various suppliers, staff and customers.”
“From all angles you will be forever in our hearts and again, thank you. SLÁN AGUS TÓG GO BOG É. Go n’eirí an t-ádh le uimhir a h’aon.”
