PSNI stop man driving 70mph while watching ‘football highlights’ on phone

A man has been caught by police driving 70mph while watching ‘football highlights’ on the evening of the European Football Championship final.

The man was stopped by Road Policing Interceptors from Sprucefield who spotted him driving on the motorway with his phone “mounted on his steering wheel”.

It was the second incident the officers encountered on the evening of July 14.

A separate man was stopped and was detected driving above three times the legal alcohol limit and taken to custody.

Taking to social media, Police Lisburn & Castlereagh said: “The roads were a little quieter during the European Championship final on Sunday night. But not as quiet as these motorists might have hoped.

“The first motorist encountered a crew from Road Policing Interceptors (Sprucefield) during a journey he shouldn’t have taken. Now he’s been arrested for drink driving after being detected at more than 3 times the legal limit.

“He’ll now face the consequences of that in court. Luckily he didn’t encounter anyone else on his journey.

“The second motorist encountered the same Interceptor crew coming back from custody whilst he watched the highlights of the match on a mobile phone.

“The phone was mounted on his steering wheel on top of the airbag. He just so happened to be driving at 70mph on the motorway at the time and didn’t notice the Interceptors travelling alongside recording the evidence of his dangerous driving either.

“Two penalty kicks for the crew.”
