Renowned Derby butchers closes doors at shopping centre after 14 years

A renowned Derby butchery has closed the doors to its shop of 14 years after what the owner described as a “very hard” decision to make. Greedy Pig Butchers closed the doors to its shop at Allestree’s Park Farm Shopping Centre on Saturday, May 25, a site that owner Latimer Higham opened back in 2010.

The popular butchers also opened two sites in Repton and Spondon in the last decade, which were both sold following the COVID-19 pandemic, before opening another shop at the popular Denby Pottery Village. Latimer, 63, said: “We’ve made the decision to close our Park Farm store after more than a decade of trading.

“Allestree has always been good for trade up until recent weeks but, unfortunately, due to difficulties of not being able to staff and the pressure of keeping a good work life balance we had to make the very hard decision to close. Over the years we have had many loyal customers at Allestree and we would like to thank each and every one of them.

“We certainly had good times here.”

Latimer, from Kenilworth in Warwickshire, added: “What’s for me now? Myself, along with my stepson Joseph Wilson, will be running our butchers and deli and Denby Pottery Village, where we have already seen some of our Allestree customers return.”

Latimer says that free delivery has been offered to Derby customers through the Greedy Pig website, so they can stock up on their favourite grub – something particularly useful with the summer months upcoming. The butchers offer a wide range of meat ranging from the classic cuts of steak such as ribeye, tomahawk, rump and fillet, to flavoured meats and sausage such as lamb and mint burgers, pork and apple burgers and spatchcock chickens.

The Greedy Pig Butchers at Denby Pottery Village is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday. Those who visit the adjoining tea house will also be able to sample Denby’s speciality loose leaf teas, barista coffee, homemade cakes and scones, rolls and afternoon teas.
