Return of 20C temperatures forecast but heavy showers to hit this weekend
Temperatures are set to rise over the coming week as high pressure returns but Ireland is facing heavy rain this weekend, Met Eireann has confirmed.
Today will begin mostly dry with sunny spells in Dublin but scattered showers will develop this afternoon and evening, some possibly heavy. Highest temperatures will reach 16 or 17 degrees in light or moderate west to northwesterly winds.
Scattered showers will continue in the capital early tonight, with the chance of the odd heavy one, but they will gradually become more isolated overnight. There will be lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in light to moderate west to southwest breezes.

Another showery day is expected in Dublin tomorrow Sunday, along with bright or sunny spells. A few of the showers may turn heavy in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures will reach 16 or 17 degrees, with light westerly winds becoming variable in the afternoon and evening.
While there is no further forecast for Dublin, here is what Met Eireann’s national outlook says:
Overview
“Low pressure tending to dominate early in the week with a trend towards a more settled regime driven by high pressure later in the week. Temperatures recovering from below average this weekend to near normal values for July next week.
Sunday night
“Showers will become isolated and will gradually die out early on in the night, leaving a mostly dry night with clear spells and a few mist patches. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes.
Monday
“Monday will start out mainly dry with sunny spells. Scattered showers will break out as the day goes on and cloud will build from the south over Munster and parts of Leinster with patchy rain and drizzle developing near the south coast towards evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in light easterly breezes.
Monday night
“Mainly dry in the north and west at first on Monday night with clear spells, but cloudier conditions further south and east with outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually spread further north overnight. Lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees generally but 8 to 11 degrees where clear spells occur in the north and west. Light northeast or variable breezes.
Tuesday
“Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. The best of any drier and brighter intervals in coastal fringes of the west and north. Highs of 16 to 20 degrees in a light to moderate east to northeast breezes.
Wednesday
“Current indications suggest that after a mostly cloudy and damp start to Wednesday, brighter, sunnier intervals will gradually break through as the day goes on. Highs of 15 to 20 degrees with mostly moderate northwest winds, fresh to strong along west and southwest coasts.
Further Outlook
“High pressure is currently indicated to become more dominant, at least for a time, with drier and sunnier conditions gradually extending from the west through Thursday and Friday and temperatures near average for the time of year.”
