Richmond Roadrunners professional women’s basketball team gears up for the season

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Roadrunners women’s professional basketball team is gearing up for its upcoming season in the River City, and 8News got a look at what the community can expect.

The team’s season opener is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at Hermitage High School, located at 8301 Hungary Springs Road.

The Roadrunners are coached by Barvenia Wooten, who played at Virginia Union University and later began the program before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team plays in the Women’s American Basketball Association, which houses 16 teams throughout the U.S.

Wooten described that the team’s goal is to boost players’ skills and give them a chance to continue the progression in their career.

“Our goal is to help women not only build their skillset, have an opportunity to get a contract to go overseas, and/or a chance with the WNBA,” Wooten said.

In addition to the support that the players receive through the team, Wooten said that the team is involved in the community, including mentorship and youth basketball camps.
