Ridgefield High School holds basketball game in honor of Serenity Law, who died last month

Ridgefield Memorial High School held a co-ed basketball game on Tuesday night in honor of Serenity Law, 15, of Ridgefield who was fatally hit by a car on the evening of April 14.

The idea came from the Student Council, according to Dr. Vickki Nadler, principal of Ridgefield Memorial High School, who said that they wanted to find a way to celebrate Serenity’s life and knew that she enjoyed playing basketball.

The game was held Tuesday night when the RMHS’ girls and boys basketball teams came together to play a co-ed match. Faculty, staff, coaches, students, friends and family all gathered in the RMHS gymnasium for the event.

“In the wake of Serenity’s untimely departure, we find solace in the memories of her vibrant spirit and her love for the game of basketball,” said Nadler, before asking everybody to take a moment of silence to honor Law. “To honor her and commemorate the mark she left we are playing this special basketball game. This event serves not only as a testament to Serenity’s passion for the sport, but also as a gathering of our communities to support one another and celebrate the life of Serenity.”

She continued, “Tonight, we dribble, shoot, and score in remembrance of a teammate and a member of the Royal community.”

The players all wore T-shirts that said “Serenity’s game” on them and sported her number 13 on their backs.

Law’s family thanked everyone who was able to participate in the game.

“Our family was filled with tears and joy witnessing all of the love that we received,” said Law’s stepmother Guisela Camilo. “Walking into that gym was bittersweet. Knowing that we won’t ever watch her step into the gym again breaks our heart. The way those talented kids had played at that game, I know for a fact Serenity was cheering from above, especially watching her sister play in that game. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”

Law played one season of basketball as a Ridgefield Royal, according to her mother Miriam Peguero who started a petition in April, calling on local authorities to take action on safety measures at the intersection where Law was hit. The petition has gathered 3,237 signatures since its creation on April 19.

“It felt very special to me and my family that her school honored her in that way,” said Peguero. “I know she would have loved it. The school has been nothing but supportive throughout this whole situation and the love from them is greatly appreciated.”
