Roger Federer Confesses to Dilemma Over Future Amid Desire to Fulfil Emotional Tennis Promise Made to Fans

After a decorated career on the court, Roger Federer has no plans of moving away from the sport. The 20-time Grand Slam champion hung up the racquet in 2022, and the Swiss tennis legend is seen enjoying the free time at his hands in various ventures. Despite building an empire through collaborations with various brands, the former number 1 has no plans to say goodbye to the sport.

For over two decades, the sport was the primary focus in the Swiss Maestro’s life. After experimenting with different fields, he doesn’t want to stay away from the game and shared his desire to stay connected in an interview with the BBC, but he did find it puzzling. Tricky, because you need to have a purpose when you come to a tennis event. You can’t just show up. Very quickly the players go like, what are you doing? ‘I’m here watching tennis,’ who would do that? ‘I like tennis,’ that doesn’t fly.”

After staying active in front of the stands, it’s unusual for the tennis legend to experience the other side with no purpose. Pairing up with Rafael Nadal for a Louis Vuitton collaboration, being adorned by an honorary degree from Dartmouth College, and making a new documentary, ‘Federer: Twelve Final Days,’ the former player has certainly been busy. He is also spending more time with his family traveling around the world. Despite the jam-packed schedule, Federer’s mind still wanders back to tennis!

Federer is eagerly searching for a purpose to fuel his motivation and not move away from the sport. The question does arise, what would be the underlying cause of his return to tennis? The 20-time Grand Slam champion is confused when it comes to the choices. However, he is sure about what it might not be at any time in the near future!

Roger Federer refuses to don the commentator’s hat

As Federer thought about the purpose of his return, the interviewer, Sally Nugent, implored the tennis star about his options. She asked Federer about the role he would prefer to take up in order to be back, as she presented him with three choices- Commentator, Coach or a mentor. Though he was unsure of what he would pick, he was certain that he did not want to be a commentator!

He flew the idea of how he could comment at the 2024 Laver Cup. However, a journalist’s words caused him to dump the idea, “And then a British journalist was like, you happy to be like super critical… and I’m like whattt. I’m like, is this this… oh my god and here I am smashing every player and talking. And no no no, I don’t want to do commentary anymore.”  After fumbling around in response, Federer has given up the thought of being a commentator.

Though he is certain today, his mind might change in the future. However, it would be interesting to watch how it would play out for the Swiss Maestro as he searches for his purpose in being back into the circuit.
