Rory McIlroy drawn in marquee US Open group with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele
In a repeat of the opening two rounds at the Masters, where Scheffler outscored McIlroy by ten shots and went on to win his second green jacket, the Holywood star will have a chance to keep tabs on his biggest rival as he looks to end a 10-year major drought and claim his fifth major.
Scheffler has been on a stellar run of form, capturing the Memorial Tournament on Sunday for his fifth win of the season and his 11th top 10 in a row.
The American has played 13 events this year with his only non-top-10 being a tie for 17th in the American Express in January.
He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship and followed a runner-up finish in the Houston Open with wins in the Masters and the RBC Heritage before his arrest at the PGA Championship saw him eventually tie for eighth.
After finishing tied second in the Charles Schwab Challenge, Scheffler returned to winning ways at the Memorial to join Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to win the Players, the Masters and the Memorial in the same year.
Schauffele, who has since overtaken McIlroy in the world rankings thanks to his maiden major win at last month’s PGA Championship, also outscored McIlroy over the first days at Augusta National.
The world’s top three will go off the first tee at 1:14pm (6:14pm Irish time) on Thursday, with Shane Lowry out three groups after the stellar threesome with Keegan Bradley and 2014 champion Martin Kaymer at 1:47pm (6:47pm Irish time).
Holywood’s Tom McKibbin will make his major debut in the first group of the day off the 10th tee with the Philippines’ Rico Hoey and Italy’s Matteo Manassero, at 6:45am (11:45am Irish time).
Seamus Power is just behind McKibbin from the 10th with South Africa’s Dean Burmeste and Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino at 6:56am (11:56am Irish time).
Other stellar groups include Tiger Woods alongside Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick while defending champion Wyndham Clark is out in the afternoon wave alongside Open champion Brian Harman and reigning US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap.
Last week’s Memorial Tournament runner-up Collin Morikawa tees it up with fellow major champions Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka while 2020 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau joins Viktor Hovland and Max Homa.
Spain’s Jon Rahm, who is battling a foot injury, partners former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth.
