Rory McIlroy ‘looks disinterested’ and is ‘finding it hard to get back up’ after US Open agony

Rory McIlroy’s former agent, Andrew Chandler, believes the golf star ‘looks disinterested’ in the wake of his crushing US Open campaign.

The 35-year-old was two shots ahead with just five holes to go at Pinehurst but dramatically collapsed, paving the way for Bryson Chambeau to reign supreme.

McIlroy performed well during the course of the tournament, with the Northern-Irishman performing like a man on a mission.

Late errors proved costly, however, and his collapse means his wait for a first major since 2014 goes on.

Chandler knows all about McIlroy, having previously worked with the Briton.

And the golf star’s former agent, speaking to Crypto Sports Betting, believes his old client is ‘disinterested’ and ‘struggling to get back up’ from setbacks.

“Rory looks disinterested to me. He doesn’t look sharp,” he said.

“It looks to me at the moment that last year took an awful lot out of him and suddenly he got let down and he’s finding it hard to get back up again.

“That’s what it looks like to me. There is no spark in his eyes, no twinkle.

“There’s been times where he plays like the old Rory, but you know that bouncy step he has when he’s playing well, it’s not there and I’m sure that year out of his life, or 18 months, took its toll.

“And don’t forget with Rory, he’s got a lot of cash. He and Tiger have got billions and the rest haven’t.

“I can’t imagine having a billion dollars and playing as hard as he does.

“He looks like he is finding the game a grind. It’s worrying.

“Rory was front and centre of Full Swing. I don’t see how he couldn’t see that was happening to him.

“Either he was getting well paid for it or he liked seeing his quotes up in lights all the time because you’d never have got Nicklaus or Tiger doing it.

“They would never have sacrificed a year of their lives, he’s playing not as well as they can do, for the sake of fighting for the PGA Tour – and he’s not even American.”

McIlroy was clearly dejected after failing to end his wait for a first major since the 2014 PGA Championship.

The veteran stormed away from Pinehurst and didn’t even offer his congratulations to DeChambeau.

Yet the American has sent a consoling message to his rival and believes McIlroy has what it takes to win majors, despite a decade of difficulty.

“Rory is one of the best to ever play,” DeChambeau said.

“Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special.

“For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way.

“He’ll win multiple more major championships. There’s no doubt. I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow.

“I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf because, to be honest, when he was climbing up the leaderboard, he was two ahead, I was like, Uh-oh, uh-oh. But luckily things went my way today.”
