RSF Tennis Club plays host to SoCal Pro Tennis Series

The Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club was a stop on the SoCal Pro Tennis Series on June 17-23, featuring many local rising players.

Now in its third year, the SoCal Pro is a seven-week-long men’s and women’s professional tennis event series on the USTA Pro Circuit and ITF World Tennis Tour. Organized by USTA Southern California and played throughout San Diego and Los Angeles counties, the Rancho Santa Fe event was a $15,000 men’s and women’s combined event, the fourth in the series.

“The SoCal Pro Series was created to help young SoCal players gain the points needed to make the main pro tours,” said RSF Tennis Club Manager John Chanfreau. “The tournament has helped many players in Southern California.

“Being part of this tour is something our club is proud of to be able to host it,” continued Chanfreau. “It’s proven that we are helping the young players in Southern California achieve their dreams.”

Several local Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club players were in the mix at the tournament including eighth-seeded Rancho Santa Fe native and Torrey Pines High School alum Jacob Brumm; Alex Stafford, who now plays at Southern Methodist University; Ethan Schiffman, a longtime member going into his sophomore season at Cal Berkeley; and William Kleege, a rising junior who just won the 2024 CIF championship with Torrey Pines as well as the CIF doubles title.

The women’s doubles side featured Torrey Pines’ rising senior Alyssa Ahn, who made it into the quarterfinal match.

The tournament kicked off with a matchup of Torrey Pines players past and present, with the 25-year-old Brumm facing off against Kleege.  Brumm, who won his first pro tournament last year, pulled off the 6-2, 6-1 first-round victory over Kleege and advanced to the quarterfinals where he lost to top-seeded Learner Tien, the eventual winner of the tournament.

On the closing day, Carlsbad resident and 15-year-old high school sophomore Julieta Pareja became the youngest singles champion in SoCal Pro Series history. The men’s doubles champions were Joshua Charlton and Patrick Maloney while sisters Anna and Carolyn Campana, former college teammates, won their first pro doubles title together.

The SoCal Tennis Series’ next event will be at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, June 24-30.
