And the Maynooth native caught everyone’s attention as he turned up to the glamorous event wearing pinstriped shorts.

Paul paired the tighty-whiteys with a loose fitting blue shirt, with just three buttons closed, from the new range.

The Aftersun star finished off his chic look with black sunglasses, white socks and a pair of horsebit loafers, all from the Italian fashion house.

The 28-year-old accessorised with the Cartier Tank Square Incurvée strapped around his wrist and some gold hoop earrings.

Love it or hate it – the fashion forward look had everyone talking.

RTE star Marty Whelan posted a photo of Paul posing and made a joke dig saying: “Has Paul no long trousers?”

Vogue posted a video of Paul smiling from ear-to-ear as he waved to the camera and said: “Hi Vogue!”

Paul’s fans were left divided over the outfit choice as they raced to the comment section to share their opinions.

One fan wrote: “Why does Paul Mescal look like he lost his trousers after a really long night with a lover?! Such a good look.”

Sally said: “He’s literally wearing boxers and not much else.”

Another fan remarked: “Of course he’s wearing short shorts.”

Robert commented: “I thought he was wearing underwear.”

Rachael added: “They’re called @chubbies and they have never gone out of style.”

Paul’s shorts have been a talking point since the success of Normal People.

BATTLE READY

In 2020 Gucci released a pair of GAA style shorts for €550 after Paul was spotted wearing a pair of O’Neill’s Maynooth GAA shorts.

Last week, Paul was seen in character on the set of Gladiator 2 for the first time.

The Irish hunk has taken the mantle from Russell Crowe for the much-anticipated sequel and certainly looks the part as Roman Emperor Lucius Veru.

The character is the son of Lucilla, who appeared in the original film 23 years ago as a young boy played by Spencer Treat Clark.

Unlike his dead fictional uncle, Joaquin Phoenix‘s cowardly and deceitful Commodus, Mescal’s Lucius doesn’t look battle shy in the new pics.

Dressed in armour that bears a striking resemblance to that warn by Crowe’s Army general Maximus Meridius, blood dripped from his head and he looked to have worked up a sweat in combat.
