Ryan Sessegnon attracting Premier League interest after Tottenham release

Ryan Sessegnon has attracted plenty of interest from clubs in the Premier League and the Bundesliga since being released by Tottenham, football.london understands.

Tottenham chose not to take up the option to extend the 24-year-old’s contract by a further year which meant he departed this summer as a free agent. Both parties are now looking towards a fresh start half a decade after the north London club spent £25million, plus Josh Onomah heading in the opposite direction, to bring him across the capital from Fulham.

Sessegnon was one of the most exciting teenagers in world football at that point. However, hamstring injuries in both legs hampered his development over the ensuring seasons meant he only ended up starting 26 Premier League matches for Tottenham over those five years.

Last season he made only one appearance for the club under Ange Postecoglou, coming off the bench for a handful of minutes at the end of the FA Cup win against Burnley in January this year after surgery to fix his hamstring left was believed to be successful in lessening the chances of further problems.

However, such was his luck in recent seasons, Sessegnon would break down in an U21s match with a hamstring problem in his other leg, which required similar surgery.

Spurs made the decision to release him at the end of his contract this month and now the former England U21 international is on the road back with the hope that both of his surgeries will reduce the chances of further hamstring issues significantly in either leg. He is currently taking part in a strength and conditioning fitness camp in Portugal, preparing himself for the season ahead and the next chapter in his career.

football.london understands that a number of clubs in both the Premier League and Bundesliga – where Sessegnon spent a successful loan season at Hoffenheim three years ago – are interested in taking him on as a free agent this summer. The player, who became a father for the first time last year, is believed to prefer to remain in England.

“Spurs. Thank you,” he wrote in his farewell post last week to the north London club on social media. “I would like to thank everyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

“I joined at 19 and have met some very special people along the way that have supported and guided me. From my teammates, to the backroom staff and to my coaches – thank you. I’ve got memories and friends for life.

“From making my debut to scoring in the Champions League. I’ll always cherish these moments. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out the way I or the club wanted during my time here. It broke my heart that I couldn’t play in front of you a lot more. I want to wish you all the best for the future. Thank you, Sess.”
