Ryanair confirms bomb threat on flight from Ibiza to Milan
“The passengers disembarked and local authorities carried out a security search”
Ibiza’s airport was paralyzed on Thursday due to a bomb threat on a Ryanair flight.
Ryanair confirmed the company was subject to a “security threat on board a Boeing 737” that was on the runway on the Balearic island.
Passengers and crew of flight FR8335 were notified before departure to Milan Bergamo of the situation.
According to El Periódico de Ibiza, a passenger claimed to have explosives on board the plane.
“In accordance with normal security procedures, passengers disembarked and local authorities carried out a routine security search before authorizing the aircraft to return to service,” Ryanair stated.
According to the information provided, the flight took off “after a brief but inevitable delay. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused as a result of this false security threat,” the company statement read.
Spanish media report that the Ibiza airport was “paralyzed” due to the threat.
During the period, many flights were diverted to alternative airports, such as Palma de Mallorca, during the widespread disruption.
Airport controllers reported that the complete stoppage lasted more than an hour.
The situation was resolved and the airport slowly returned to normal, with controllers stating that “significant delays are still expected in the process of recovering normal operations.”
In the end, the bomb threat was described as being “false”.
