Sacred Heart wins another KHSAA team tennis championship; St. Xavier falls in semifinals

Sacred Heart Academy continued its reign over Kentucky tennis on Tuesday.

The Valkyries beat Corbin, 3-0, in the final of the KHSAA Girls Team Tennis State Tournament at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex.

It’s the sixth straight championship for the Valkyries and their 15th overall.

Sacred Heart’s Sanam Krishnani beat Corbin’s Katherine Morton at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Valkyries also got 6-0, 6-0 victories from their No. 1 doubles team of Avery Voss and Claire Rueff and No. 2 doubles team of Abby Goldentul and Natalie Wagner.

Sacred Heart’s Ellie Hammond (No. 1 singles) and Lilah Shallcross (No. 2 singles) were winning their matches, which were suspended when the Valkyries secured an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

The Valkyries opened play Monday with 3-0 victories over Lexington Christian and Madisonville-North Hopkins and then defeated South Warren, 3-0, in Tuesday morning’s semifinals. Corbin beat McCracken County, 3-2, in the other semifinal.

Covington Catholic beat McCracken County, 3-0, to take the boys championship for the second straight year.

Covington Catholic beat St. Xavier, 3-1, in Tuesday’s semifinals. McCracken County beat Ashland Blazer, 3-2, in the other semifinal.

In the semifinals, St. X got its only point from Jacob Ray, who defeated Owen Erpenbeck at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

CovCath’s Alex Yeager beat Mac Bowman at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. CovCath won both doubles matches as Kalei Christensen and Blake Hussey beat Aditya Shah and Walker Bush, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1, and Jacob Kramer and Will Tribble defeated Henry Wagner and Nolin Underhill, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2.

CovCath’s Brady Hussey led St. X’s William Lewis, 7-5, 2-0, at No. 1 singles when the match was suspended.
