Age Of Gold

The Chesham Stakes opens up Saturday’s meeting and the final day of a thrilling Royal Ascot.

A few favourites have won this over the years but it’s been a couple of outsiders the last two renewals including 40/1 Holloway Boy.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this four times in the last ten years and has Bedtime Story as the 9/4 favourite.

There’s a few runners of the 18 with just one run and even a couple set to make their debut at Royal Ascot which is a huge ask, but was accomplished by Holloway Boy in this in 2022.

I tipped Age Of Gold on debut at 6/4 last month at Yarmouth and was impressed by the way he quickened away, having not started all that promising.

Third placed Nascimento went on to place a close tenth in the Coventry on Tuesday which certainly boosts his form.

The Godolphin team of trainer Charlie Appleby hasn’t had many entries in this year’s Royal Ascot and he may be due a win.

Expensive Rose is an interesting each-way contender, another ridden by Oisin Murphy that’s caught the eye over the week.

She’s one of the few fillies in the race but by Australia looked comfortable upped to 7f last time.

And has form tying her with the likes of Miss Lamai who impressed here earlier this week with a big payout as an each-way bet.

Middle Earth

Murphy is on board this John & Thady Gosden-trained star by Roaring Lion, Middle Earth.

I’ve been keen on the colt before and tipped him to win on his return as a three-year-old at Newbury in the Aston Park Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 1m4f.

The drop in trip coupled with the fact it was his first run of the season has shown his progression and is likely to keep that momentum going on his second run of the season.

He won three times in 2023 including here over 1m6f and has the benefit of being unexposed over this trip still and should be an exciting horse to follow this season.

Coming up against Continuous who was 16 lengths ahead at Doncaster in September is of course concerning in the St Leger, but he faced soft ground which clearly doesn’t suit him.

And if anything allows his price of 5/2 to give him more value.

Tricast/Trifecta

14 runners race in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes contested over 6f for a thrilling renewal, where £567,000 will go to the winner.

The Group 1 contest is part of the British Champions Series and has the feel of a big field handicap with prices starting at 5/1.

6f can sometimes be a tricky distance to cover given some sprint horses will thrive on one day and not the next time.

Kinross is hard to look past at 11/2 each-way for being among the most consistent, winning on course and distance.

However, there’s something about Royal Ascot which hasn’t seen him finish in the top six before and that’s concerning to side with.

It’s very possible he prefers the autumn conditions or at least takes a couple of races to warm up ahead of a successful remainder of the season.

There’s scope to go big on this as Mill Stream, Art Power, Washington Heights and Mitbaahy are all capable of taking this up but it can really depend on the tactics.

Mitbaahy can also blow the start at times but it benefitted last time to come from off the pace and charge home ahead of Washington Heights, Regional and Ano Syra at the Curragh.

Mill Stream is benefitting from a wind op before this season which has seemingly taken effect to the already listed, Group 3 winner and Group 1 runner.

He stormed home in a bunched finish at York last month in the Clipper Stakes under William Buick who retains the ride here and all have a possibility to be up there.

River Tiber & Never So Brave

20 runners feature in the Jersey Stakes, the Group 3 7f contest for three-year-olds.

Haatem has stormed this season taking the Craven Stakes with ease, third in the 2000 Guineas and second to Rosallion in the Irish 2000 Guineas.

That form has obviously been boosted massively with the latter winning the St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday.

However, River Tiber was also close to Rosallion at the Curragh stepping up to 1m for the first time and may be better suited to the 7f, where Haatem looks like he’ll need every yard to win that.

River Tiber is unexposed over this trip and also receives 3lb off this now Wathnan Racing-owned star and it’s hard to look past a Ryan Moore x Aidan O’Brien masterclass.

But it’s also worth a small each-way on Never So Brave in the Derby winning colours of owner Saeed Suhail.

The three-year-old only has four runs but has turned a corner this season winning comfortably on both occasions, so much so he’s rocketed up to an overall rating of 101 and should/could be much higher.

It’s dangerous to rule him out entirely at least from placing and with Saffie Osborne on board could give a surprise at 14/1 given the nature of his last two victories.

Flaming Rib

The famous Wokingham Stakes is one of the biggest handicaps at Royal Ascot, contested over 6f.

Flaming Rib is a massive price considering and the exact sort of contender a Wokingham Stakes winner can look like.

He’s a 6f veteran in many ways yet still only five-years-old with only two runs this calendar year.

The former Group 1 runner was 17th in this last year but has been nudged down as much as 8lb since then which gives him a massive chance.

Add to that it being his third run since being gelded he stands a good chance at running well at a big price.
