Saturday Lucky 15 horse racing tips from Ed Quigley: Best picks for Epsom Derby

Top Tipster and Broadcaster, Ed ‘Longshot Ted’ Quigley has been in great form, and serves up a Lucky 15 for Derby Day at Epsom….

Ted’s picks for Saturday, Lucky 15, June 1:

Find the following picks for Saturday races. Play on the races with our best expert-rated horse racing betting sites:

  • Epsom 2.00 – Breege – bet with bet365
  • Epsom 2.35 – Epictetus – bet with CopyBet
  • Epsom 3.45 – One Night Stand – bet with talkSPORT BET
  • Epsom 4.30 – Ancient Wisdom – bet with BetUK

Epsom 2.00 – Breege each way

BREEGE has been hitting the crossbar in recent races, and gets another opportunity to get back in the winner’s enclosure here. She hasn’t won since her debut, but looks like an each-way play for this race arriving on the back of an excellent performance when beaten a head at Goodwood.

This extended 1m with a bit if cut in the ground looks perfect for the 4-year-old, who can run a massive race for the John and Sean Quinn team. Jason Hart takes the ride, and she looks to have solid claims of getting involved at the business end of proceedings. It’s a fairly wide-open race on paper, so Breege gets the nod from me.

Epsom 2.35 – Epictetus each way

EPICTETUS blows hot and cold, but has a lot of ability, so has to be taken seriously for the John and Thady Gosden team. It is likely that he needed his run on the comeback trail at Ascot recently, but if on song, he is a danger to everyone here, as he showed when winning a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood last season, causing a minor upset in the process of doing so.

It is also worth noting that Epictetus has winning form at the venue, so we know that the idiosyncrasies of Epsom’s layout don’t hold any fears for the 4-year-old. Any rain around won’t be an issue for Epictetus who handles plenty of give underfoot, and with 8 horses declared, he looks to have solid each-way claims in doing so.

Epsom 3.45 – One Night Stand each way

This will be fast and furious, as the Epsom ‘Dash’ rolls into town. ONE NIGHT STAND hasn’t been firing on all cylinders lately, but must be respected for the Saffie Osborne and Scott Dixon combination. His last couple of runs have been lacklustre, but you would imagine that he will be primed for this race, and based on his run in this contest 12 months ago, he has to come into the equation.

In last year’s renewal, he was beaten just over a length into fifth off a BHA rating of 92, so tucked in here off a 2lb lower mark this time around sees him looking attractively handicapped. If he can ping the gates from Stall 10, he could easily get a lot of his rivals in trouble and rates an each-way bet here.

Epsom 4.30 – Ancient Wisdom

In regards to the Derby, it is the marmite horse City Of Troy which creates a riveting dynamic to the big race. After bombing out spectacularly, Aidan O’Brien has been unwavering in his bullishness of his star performer from last season bouncing back, a la Auguste Rodin. It still requires a big leap of faith to back him at cramped odds in my view, so I will be happy to take him on.

ANCIENT WISDOM was a well beaten favourite behind Economics in the Dante recently, but he still managed to see off the rest of his rivals, and I think there will be even more improvement to come upped in trip to 1m4f, and it will be a case of the more the rain the merrier for this strapping individual. I think there are plenty more gears to come and I wouldn’t rule out more top-level success from the Charlie Appleby team.
