SC basketball talent Jack Busenhart commits to D-III Benedictine University | Local Roundup

Former Santa Cruz High basketball talent Jack Busenhart has committed to NCAA Division III Benedictine University, a private Catholic university in Lisle, Illinois.

Busenhart, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward, was a Coast Conference all-North Division honorable mention selection after helping College of San Mateo (14-15, 7-5) finish in third place last season. He totaled 113 points and 123 rebounds over 28 games, 13 of which were starts, in his sophomore season.

The Eagles (16-11 overall) went 12-6 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference for third place under coach Jordan Townsend.

Women’s soccer

2024 recruiting class: UC Santa Cruz revealed its 2024 recruiting class on Instagram.

The seven-player class includes Christopher alumna Dominique Marques, an outside back and forward who transferred from Hartnell, midfielder Cadence Fisher of Marshall Fundamental in Pasadena, winger Erin Freeman and midfielder Alex Freeman out of Berkeley, goalie Ainsley Gove out of Oak Park, Tiana Stouch forward/midfielder out of Adolfo Camarillo, and defender Maddie Puente out of Inderkum in Sacramento.

Marques had four goals and an assist for the Panthers (9-11-3), who took third in the Coast Conference South Division and qualified for the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs.

The Freemans combined for five goals and four assists for the Yellowjackets (15-6-3), who reached the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals.

Puente helped the Tigers (25-2-1) win their league and reach the Sac-Joaquin Section D-I semifinals.

The Banana Slugs went 12-4-3 overall in 2023.

Men’s soccer

2024 recruiting class: UCSC announced its 2024 recruiting class on Instagram. It includes De Anza College transfer Sigi Valencia, Berkeley midfielder Oliver Gill and goalie Tobias Jacobson-Bell, Wilcox High midfielder Alessandro Castro, and defender Kotetsu Horike, a South Torrance alum who sat out his sophomore season at UC Davis in ’23 with an injury.

Valencia, a forward, scored four goals to help the Mountain Lions (11-3-7, 8-2-3) take second in the Coast Conference’s South Division and advance to the second round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs.

Gill and Jacobson-Bell helped Berkeley (23-3-2) win the North Coast Section Division I title and qualify for the CIF NorCal Regional playoffs. Gil had six goals and nine assists, and Jacobson-Bell gave up just two goals in 14 games.

Castro had six goals and eight assists over 14 games for the Chargers (11-5-2).

The Banana Slugs went 10-6-4 overall in 2023.
