Search for Ireland’s top junior racing commentator announced by Barretstown

An exciting new competition searching for Ireland’s top junior racing commentator has been announced by Barretstown.

In advance of the upcoming Irish Derby at the Curragh Racecourse (June 28-30), the Kildare based charity is issuing a rallying call, appealing for budding young commentators, to try their hand at capturing the magic and excitement of a horse race for thousands of festival race goers.

The charity is inviting submissions from children aged between eight to 12 to enter and be in with a chance to win, not only a VIP family trip to the festival but also a highly sought after visit to the media commentary box.

Best of all, the winning entry could also mark the start of a career in racing broadcast commentary!

Barretstown is the largest provider of therapeutic camps and programmes for children affected by cancer and other serious illnesses.

Founded in 1994 by Hollywood actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, it has served over 120,000 campers through its residential camps and outreach programmes and is projected to support over 250,000 children and families by the end of this decade.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the charity with a series of celebratory events to mark this milestone taking place throughout the year culminating with a Gala event at the RDS in September.

The charity enjoys a long-standing and historic relationship with the Curragh Racecourse as it was at this location over three decades ago that Newman signed the agreement for the establishment of Barretstown.

Speaking about the competition, Dee Ahearn, CEO of Barretstown said,

“One of the standout features of Barretstown is our focus on fun and bringing joy and excitement to children who are impacted by cancer and other serious illnesses. Leaning into that sense of fun and excitement, we are issuing a rallying call to children to try their hand at becoming Ireland’s next top racing commentator, vying with the likes of legendary racing broadcasters such as Tracy Piggott.

“It’s also a lovely opportunity to be a part of our long-standing relationship with the Curragh Racecourse and to celebrate the historic signing of the Barretstown Estate by Paul over 30 years ago. Since that time, we have served over 120,000 children with that figure set to double by the end of this decade. An independent report, assessing the impact of our services, valued it at over €1.9 billion. Events such as the upcoming race meet in the Curragh Racecourse, provide an important platform to further build awareness of the importance of the work of Barretstown.”
