Should dilute your milk after the age of 25? Here’s what experts have to say

As you age, you must adopt healthy habits that you could easily ignore when you were young. While we all know about the importance of a good diet and regular exercise, did you know that according to some experts, you should consider drinking diluted milk instead of normal milk?

Adeeba Ikkram Saiyad, a nutritionist and dietician shared a video on Instagram mentioning, “Drink milk until the age of 20 or 25. Do not drink milk after that, dilute it.”

So, is this valid?

Tamal Chatterjee, VP, of marketing, at Sid’s Farm, said, “Food habits, lifestyles, and intake of nutrition from a lot more sources may reduce dependency on milk. Diluting milk can also make it easier to digest for those with sensitivities.”

How does diluting milk affect its nutritional value?

Diluting milk with water primarily impacts the concentration of calories, fat, protein, and calcium per serving. While dilution might slightly affect the intake of certain vitamins if fat content is reduced, the overall impact on the nutritional value of milk is generally modest, explained Chatterjee.

“However, it’s essential to ensure that even with dilution, individuals are still meeting their nutritional needs with a balanced diet”, added Chatterjee.

How does diluting milk impact calcium absorption and overall bone health?

While diluting milk with water may not directly impair calcium absorption, it can lead to lower calcium intake. Individuals need to ensure they’re meeting their calcium needs through a balanced diet that includes other sources of calcium-rich foods, such as leafy greens, fortified foods, and supplements if necessary, to support optimal bone health, suggested Chatterjee.

How does diluted milk fit into the dietary recommendations of individuals with chronic conditions?

“For individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease, diluted milk can offer a lower-calorie, lower-sodium, and lower-saturated fat option to support their dietary needs”, mentioned Chatterjee

Chatterjee said that choosing low-fat or skim milk and diluting it with water may help manage blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels while providing essential nutrients like calcium and potassium. However, individuals must consult with healthcare professionals to ensure diluted milk fits their overall dietary plan.

Recommendations for individuals who prefer drinking diluted milk?

Since it’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of scenario, one may want to start with a conservative dilution ratio, such as one part water to one part milk, and adjust based on taste preferences and nutritional needs. Some may prefer a stronger milk flavour, while others prefer a more diluted taste. It is important to pay heed to how one’s body is reacting and also consult a medical professional for safety, recommended Chatterjee.
