Construction of the Eastern Garavogue Bridge is due to begin in the final quarter of 2025 according to an update on the scheme issued by Sligo County Council.

The Eastern Garvogue Bridge and Approach Road Scheme is seen as being of strategic importance to the development of Sligo and in linking communities and facilitating development within Sligo City especially the east ward.

The scheme has been developed as a traffic calmed urban distributor road consisting of a two-way single carriageway, a dedicated two-way cycle way with footpaths on either side. The project is listed for construction in the National Development Plan 2018 to 2027 though it didn’t have the backing of Transport Minister Eamon Ryan who resigned as leader of the Green Party on Tuesday.

Engineering Consultants have been appointed to assist in completing the Detailed Design and construction of the project. Detailed design of the scheme is been progressed and is expected to be completed by Q4 2024.

It will then progress to Phases 5 -preparation of tender documentation to go to construction.

This is planned to start in Q4 2024 and should be completed by Q2 2025.

Consultation is ongoing with landowners affected by the CPO to agree accommodation works and agree compensation. Advanced works scoping is been carried out to determine if there is a requirement for appropriate additional surveys, investigations or advance works. It is expected that Phase 6 construction will start in Q4 2025.

Cllr Marie Cassrly says the positive update was very welcome and she looked forward to continued progression over the next year.
