Sometimes you want more than a meal. These South Shore places offer play with their food

What to do and where to eat are usually two separate questions when trying to make fun plans. Those two questions can be answered in the same breath, however, with the South Shore’s host of locations to eat and play in one place.

Here are four local places to check out.

PLAY: Golf Lounge 18 opened in Braintree at South Shore Plaza in February. It consists of 13 golf simulator bays featuring 250 different golf courses from which to choose and offers lessons with PGA professionals and various golf leagues for men women and children.

Guests can reserve golf bays, which can accommodate up to six golfers, and they may also bring their own clubs or use those supplied by the facility.

EAT: Golf Lounge 18’s menu includes all-day breakfast options, tacos, appetizers, sandwiches, subs, salads, five different types of grilled cheese sandwiches and fried Oreos for desert..

Ryan Family Amusements at Hanover Crossing includes two levels and 40,000 square feet of entertainment space.

PLAY: Activities at Ryan Family Amusements include bowling, axe throwing, nearly 100 state-of-the-art arcade games, virtual reality, laser tag and more. Televisions are placed throughout the site to catch games as they happen.

EAT: Ryan Family Amusements includes a restaurant and two bars serving beer, wine, cocktails and mocktails.

The restaurant offers a full menu of pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, appetizers, soups and salads, along with full entrees and a host of Tex-Mex dishes.

While the family-run business has other locations throughout Massachusetts, as well as New Hampshire and Rhode Island, not all offer the full range of activities available at the Hanover location.

“All in for us meant taking the best gaming features we offer in all of our locations and combining them under one roof,” the Ryan Family Amusements website says of the Hanover location.

Despite its name, Pinz Bowl is more than just a bowling alley.

PLAY: The 36,000-square-foot space is true to its name, with 16 lanes available to accommodate reservations and walk-ins.

It also offers darts and axe throwing, which requires a waiver that can be filled out online. Like the bowling lanes, walk-ins and reservations are both welcome.

A full-scale arcade includes 50 games ranging from classics like Space Invaders and Mario Kart alongside modern game-playing experiences such as Halo and The Walking Dead.

EAT: the In addition to offering the traditional bowling alley fare of chips and fries, pizza and hot dogs, the menu at Pinz also includes burgers, wings, five different mac and cheese dishes, subs and salads. Adult beverages are also available.

The sky-high netting around Topgolf in Canton is hard to miss, but ever wonder what goes on inside?

PLAY: While it might have golf in the name, the giant net to stop balls and a green like a golf course, Topgolf isn’t really a driving range. Rather, it’s a scored game where players get points for hitting balls into the right spots.

Each ball has a microchip so it can be tracked in flight and into targets, each worth a specific number of points.

The company has multiple locations along the East Coast. Canton is its only Massachusetts site and features 90 outdoor, climate-controlled bays spanning three levels.

“Topgolf takes its ‘not golf’ very seriously,” an announcement said when the location opened in November. “That’s why a full-service restaurant manned by executive chefs, 28-foot video wall, more than 200 HDTVs (ideal for watching the Pats or Red Sox), music and year-round family-friendly programming is just as much a part of the Topgolf experience.”

EAT: The menu includes appetizers, wings, flatbreads, salads, sandwiches and other handheld offerings. Topgolf also serves a full variety of beers, wines and cocktails.
