Staff from Cork school take a big leap to raise funds for sensory room

Staff from a Cork school took part in a charity skydive to raise funds for a new sensory room at the weekend.

St Mary’s Special School in Rochestown caters for 75 children with special education needs.

On Sunday last, 14 staff members, including principal Kerri Hollywell, travelled to Offaly to take part in a tandem skydive to raise money to install a new sensory room at the school.

“The sensory room will help our students with self-regulation and to manage their sensory needs which will in turn increase independence and their ability to access their education,” Ms Hollywell told The Echo.

“After a long, nervous wait due to cloudy weather, we eventually managed to skydive for St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.”

Ms Hollywell said the fundraiser has exceeded its target of €12,000, with more donations still coming in. “The more we raise the more we can do to provide necessary resources for our students,” she said.
