State Tournament Scoreboard: Belchertown girls, Lenox boys tennis teams compete on Wednesday

No. 9 Belchertown (3), No. 8 Watertown (2)

The No. 9 Belchertown girls tennis team lives for the dramatics.

That didn’t change during Wednesday’s Division III Round of 16 matchup against No. 8 Watertown, as the Orioles dropped two of the three opening matches. The deficit was short-lived, though, as both first and second doubles partners earned straight-set wins to help Belchertown keep its postseason alive with an eventual 3-2 victory.

First singles competitor Ava Shea defeated Eva Khalarian 6-0, 6-0 to ensure the Orioles an early lead. But then second and third singles members Nina Paquette (6-0, 6-2) and Mairead Connolly (6-2, 6-2) quickly helped Watertown move ahead.

The previous score didn’t matter, though, as first doubles partners Emalee Chaisson and Mia Corish made quick work of Rebecca Hughes and Sara Yasin by a score of 6-2, 6-3 to even the score. In the end, Kasey Gibbons and Amanda Murray completed the comeback with another straight-set win (6-2, 6-1) against Ava Hayward and Ani Ohannessian to help the Orioles move forward.

Belchertown improved to 19-3 and will now hit the road to face No. 1 Wilmington in the D-III state quarterfinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.
