No. 7 Longmeadow (5), No. 26 Plymouth North (0)

On Wednesday afternoon, the No. 7 Longmeadow boys’ tennis team started the Division II state tournament in style, winning 5-0 at home against No. 26 Plymouth North.

The first singles were the only match to go three sets, as the Eagles’ Danny Stephenson won the opening set against Kevin Liang, 6-4. But that was the only set the opposition claimed on Wednesday as Liang countered with back-to-back 6-2, 6-2 wins to ensure the Lancers an opening 1-0 lead in this best-of-three series.

Fellow second and third singles contributors Ben Norman and Jackson Combe followed suit with straight-set wins to triple Longmeadow’s cushion. It was smooth sailing from there, as first doubles partners Ben Mahoney and Richard Li defeated their opponents Jack Cleland and Bryce Murray by 6-3, 6-3 to keep the streak alive.

Second doubles partners John Rousou and James Wray then completed what the Lancers started with an easy 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Brody McGraw and Matt Wong to finish the match.

Behind their fifth-season shutout, the Lancers improved to 17-3 and will now welcome No. 10 Hingham in the D-II Round of 16, with a time and date to be announced.
