Super Screener: Nassau offers value on big Woodbine card

Many eyes will be on Churchill Downs this weekend with the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes day card Saturday and a mandatory payout on the pick 6 Sunday for closing day.

And while this week’s Super Screener includes the all-stakes Pick 6 on Saturday as well as a trio of stakes from closing day, a pair of which make up a third of that mandatory payout Pick 6, Super Screener impresario Mike Shutty is hunting his biggest game north of the border. That includes a pair of high-priced value plays on a Canada Day card on Saturday at Woodbine that features a quintet of stakes.

The most of intriguing of which, at least based on morning line of Shutty’s top opinions, is the Nassau Stakes (G2), the last of ten races on the Canada Day card. Fev Rover won this race last year before going on to win a pair of Grade 1 races later in the year. She made her six-year-old debut on Belmont Stakes eve at Saratoga Race Course, finishing sixth of 13, but that was a tough assignment having to go 1 3/16 miles off a seven-month bench.

Still, Shutty has reasons to oppose the 5-2 morning line favorite, preferring instead Fast as Flight at 6-1.

“This very consistent mare that has finished in the exacta ten times over 16 grass starts and has not missed the superfecta over her last 10 starts won’t miss it here either,” Shutty writes. “She moved to the barn of Marty Drexler earlier this year and in just two starts finished second in her seasonal debut before winning the Modesty Stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard at Churchill Downs. She moved forward in that start and following the short break and cut back in distance, she’ll take another move forward here.”
