Defending champions England get their campaign underway against Scotland, while first-time qualifiers Uganda will attempt to cause an upset against Super Eights regulars Afghanistan.

Salt set to put Saltires to the sword

Phil Salt is in the sort of form that ought to make Scotland’s bowlers quake in their boots ahead of facing him in both sides’ Group B opener in Bridgetown.

The 27-year-old has been England’s highest run-scorer in five of his last seven T20I appearances and could outshine captain Jos Buttler and the rest of the hosts’ stacked batting line-up back in the country where his cricket career began.

Salt grew up in Barbados and honed his attacking style on Caribbean pitches. He smashed back-to-back T20 tons for England in Grenada and Trinidad last December, returning from the tour with 331 runs, a Player of the Series award and an average of 82.75.

Scotland’s attack suffered an early onslaught in their final warm-up game against Afghanistan when opener Gulbadin Naib smashed 69 from just 30 balls and they can expect Salt to target the boundary in the powerplay overs on Tuesday.

Dutch bowlers must beware Rhinos’ charge

The Netherlands are favoured to get the better of Nepal in their Group D clash in Dallas, but the Himalayan nation have enough power in their batting line-up to make it an uphill battle.

The Rhinos smashed a total of 13 sixes – one more than the Dutch did in overhauling their score – when the teams last met in a triangular series earlier this year.

And they struck eight maximums in a two-run defeat to the Netherlands a few days earlier.

The dimensions of the ground where Tuesday’s match will be played will not discourage the Nepalese batters either, with the USA and Canada having smashed 21 sixes between them in Sunday’s tournament opener in Texas.

Spinner set to star for Cricketing Cranes

One of the stars of Uganda’s qualification appears ready to make an impact on the big stage against Afghanistan.

Spinning all-rounder Alpesh Ramjami could be the Cricket Cranes’ greatest weapon as he enters the tournament with a T20 bowling average of 8.88 and an economy rate of 4.74.

Admittedly, the 29-year-old has never faced a Test-playing nation, but his style of bowling should be well suited to a slow wicket in Guyana that offered plenty of turn to the spinners in Sunday’s clash between West Indies and Papua New Guinea,

Ramjani could open the bowling for Uganda, who relied on his wicket-taking ability during last year’s African qualifiers.

He returned figures of 3-26, 3-13, 2-20, 2-12 and 2-1 in the Regional Final and looks like the most potent threat among skipper Brian Mark Masaba’s bowling options.
