Teenage girl dies following football match in County Louth
A teenage girl has died during a football game in Termonfeckin in Co Louth.
It is believed the young player took ill during a Louth School Girls League (LSGC) game at a soccer grounds in the Co Louth village on Thursday evening.
She was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in nearby Drogheda but sadly passed away.
All football activities have been suspended until further notice by The Louth Schools Girls League following the tragic event.
The North Eastern Football League (NEFL) committee has also circulated a message to clubs informing them that it has called off all matches scheduled for this weekend, including all ladies’ fixtures, as a mark of respect to the young girl and her family.
The young player was said to be heavily involved in sport, both soccer and GAA in the area, and was from a well-respected family in Louth.
An Garda Siochana confirmed they were notified of the incident on the evening in question.
A statement from a garda spokesperson reads; ‘Gardaí were notified of an incident where a female (aged in her teens) took ill in Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, on Thursday 11th July 2024.
‘She was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth, where she subsequently passed away.’
