Teenager arrested over alleged assault of woman in North Cork

Gardaí have arrested a teenager in connection with the alleged assault of a woman near Newmarket, Co Cork.

The woman, who is in her 30s, was attacked while she walked alone on a forest trail in Island Wood near Newmarket.

The woodland, while secluded, is very popular with walkers in the area.

She raised the alarm immediately with gardaí in Mallow, who have now arrested a juvenile in his teens.

The teenager was arrested on Saturday morning, but was released without charge on Saturday afternoon, with gardaí saying a file would be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP/)

Gardaí in Mallow are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident.

Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity of Island Wood on the outskirts of Newmarket, and surrounding areas on Thursday, June 6, between 4pm and 10pm, and who may have camera footage (including dash cam and action cameras) are asked to make this available to Gardaí.

Any person who was walking, cycling, running or visiting the Island Wood walking trails that evening and who may have noticed any unusual activity, is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.
