Tennis star who ‘quit to become lingerie model’ drops update during Wimbledon
Former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Camila Giorgi sensationally retired from tennis earlier this year, with the Italian said to be focusing on her career as a lingerie model
Italian former tennis star Camila Giorgi has given fans an update after she secretly retired from the sport earlier this year.
The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who reportedly earned around £5million in prize money during her professional career, is believed to have hung up her racket in order to focus on her burgeoning career as a lingerie model and fashion designer.
She played her last match against World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open in March and has been out of the public eye ever since. But on Monday, the former World No. 26 gave her followers on social media a glimpse into her new life.
The 32-year-old uploaded a captionless mirror selfie to her Instagram story, donning denim shorts and a low-cut beige top. It was the first post she’d made since officially announcing her retirement from tennis in May.
Giorgi sparked concern following her defeat to Swiatek back in March after she failed to appear at her scheduled tour dates. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) released a statement saying they had been unable to reach her, leading to a scramble to find her.
Eventually, Giorgi announced she’d left the sport, but not before rumours circulated that she had fled to the USA from Italy following questions about her tax returns. Her lawyers later refuted claims that her retirement was linked to her reported tax issues, stating that she had already planned to end her career.
In a shocking development reported by La Repubblica, via Corriere della Serra, Giorgi was accused of taking several expensive items from a villa she was renting with members of her family, including rugs and antique tables.
Her legal team later clarified that her departure from the villa was merely “temporary” due to “a divergence of views within the family”. They also stressed that Giorgi had “no intention of escaping investigations or responsibilities”.
Giorgi then took to her Instagram, which boasts 740,000 followers, to address the swirling rumours, saying: “There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I hope to provide more information about the interesting opportunities I will have in the future.”
Despite making it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2018, Giorgi’s career didn’t see her advance past the fourth round in any major tournament throughout her 14 years on the circuit.
