Terzic quits with ex-Liverpool man in line to step up at Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic has resigned, just weeks after the side’s 2024 Champions League final defeat.

The 41-year-old reportedly asked for his contract with the club to be terminated with immediate effect.

Having become interim manager in 2020, Terzic was then promoted to manager in 2022.

He guided Dortmund to a fifth place finish in the Bundesliga this season, as well as leading them to their first Champions League final since 2013.

Although they were ultimately defeated 2-0 in the final by the now 15-time winners Real Madrid, Terzic’s and the team were widely commended for their achievements.

The German-Croatian manager also won the DFB Cup with the club in the 2020/21 season.

In a video posted by Dortmund, Terzic issued an emotional message to fans as he bid farewell.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to find the right words,” he said. “It’s still really difficult for me, but I want to tell you today that I’m leaving BVB.”

He went on: “It’s been 14 years since I was able to sign my first contract here. With a short break, I’ve been able to live my dream for nine years now. The last six years in the coaching team and very close to the team were particularly unforgettable for me and an incredible journey.”

Terzic explained that he had had a conversation with the club following the Champions League final as he tried to come to a decision.

He said: “I then let it all sink in and take effect and also thought about it for a long time and then I still had the feeling that now that the club is reorienting itself, both in terms of management and the new start in the team, I believe that it is time for a new man on the sidelines to accompany and lead the whole thing.”

According to German media outlet BILD, the likely candidate for his replacement is former Liverpool player Nuri Sahin.

Sahin spent the time between August 2012 and January 2013 on loan at Liverpool, where he scored three times in his 12 appearances.

But he made over 250 appearances for Dortmund during his career, and could now be set to take up the reins.

The former midfielder is currently the assistant manager at Dortmund, having been the manager of Turkish Super Lig club Antalyaspor until December 2023.
