Once they were derided as the poor, uncultured relative of the holiday industry, ridiculed for families queuing up to consume as much as possible at the 24-hour buffet, leaving only to squabble over deckchairs and occasionally harass staff while gesticulating wildly at their wristbands.
Now, though, the all-inclusive holiday is enjoying a renaissance, buoyed by a greater span of offerings, and dining options beyond the buffet. According to figures published by The Times last month, the all-inclusive market was set to reach almost 50pc of all summer holiday bookings in the UK this year.
