As the summer holiday season takes off in earnest, we asked 10 writers and critics to name their favourite books about travel. The brief was to choose something “more The Great Railway Bazaar than The Rough Guide to Thailand” and the resulting choices will take you from the Afghan desert via Venice, Rome, small-town America and India (among other locations) to the snug of an Irish bar.
