The Indo Daily: Joey Barton – lawsuits, red cards, average football and a prison sentence
Prior to Manchester City’s meteoric rise and dominance of Premier League football, the team was made up of a series of misfits, with one player standing head and shoulders above the rest in terms of controversy. His name was Joey Barton.
A self-styled “outlaw”, Barton was known more for his problematic antics on and off the pitch than any footballing brilliance during his turbulent career. Now retired from playing, the former Man City, Newcastle and QPR midfielder began a crusade of misogynistic attacks against female pundits late last year.
As the months progressed his content began to veer into the world of online conspiracies and right-wing tropes. Last week, Barton apologised and agreed to pay damages to broadcaster Jeremy Vine following a series of offensive tweets falsely alluding to him being a paedophile, in posts seen by millions of users.
Today on the Indo Daily as part of our Downfall series, Tabitha Monahan is joined by Enda Brady, presenter with TRT World, to discuss the once promising career of sporting loudmouth Joey Barton and a lifetime of being “the controversialist’.
