The Locals review: Misjudged RTÉ documentary on local elections gives too much airtime to the toxic far-right

Set up as an objective view of north inner city Dublin, Luke McManus’s documentary unfortunately comes up short

Early on in Luke McManus’s documentary The Locals (available now on RTÉ Player), filmed during the run-up to last month’s local elections in Dublin’s north inner city, Malachy Steenson, a far-right candidate, is sharing his obnoxious extremist beliefs.

Steenson, who campaigned for a “No” vote in the 1992 abortion referendum and in recent times has become a high-profile anti-immigration activist, says: “We’ve now moved on to killing the old people with euthanasia.”
