The story of ARC: ‘We wanted to build a safe house, a listening house, a haven for cancer patients and their families’

After supporting a beloved friend through cancer treatment, Barbara Cosgrave was inspired to raise funds, later helping Dr Des Carney bring plans for a cancer support centre to life, which is now in its 30th year

For 84-year-old Barbara Cosgrave, the trigger for founding ARC Cancer Support was the diagnosis and then death of her great friend, Margaret Coleman.

“When I left school, I went to work in the bank,” Barbara says, “first in Arklow and then Drogheda. I had a friend there, Margaret, who was two years younger than me. She sat at the desk opposite me and I got great mileage out of her. Margaret was larger than life. The youngest of a large family, she was outrageous, and a total hedonist. She smoked — Dunhills, using a gold cigarette lighter — and drank G&Ts. She lived for fun.”
