There’s Already A ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’ Shield Saw Mod For The Original 1993 Game

My very favorite trailer / reveal of the Xbox Showcase, and really of this entire Summer Games Fest extravaganza, was DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Not only was the trailer fantastic—a captivating, ultraviolent, rhythmic dive into one of the coolest-looking entries in the series ever—the game itself sounds amazing. It sounds so cool, in fact, that Microsoft isn’t keeping it as an Xbox exclusive, releasing it on PS5 as well (though it’s a day-one Game Pass release for Xbox and PC subscribers).

Because the modding community is also amazing, it’s no huge surprise to see that someone has already added the badass chain-shield from the trailer into the original DOOM on PC.

Twitter user Craneo, who created the mod, posted this short video of the shield in action. It looks terrific:

I’ve just downloaded DOOM so I can take this shield for a bloody spin. DOOM was not only my first first-person shooter (I actually played it before Wolfenstein, and much more extensively) it was also the first time I saw someone play a game online. My uncle is a big tech nerd and when I was just a kid, he and one of his nerd friends had set it up to play online (not via LAN but across town) and at the time I really didn’t even understand what that meant. It completely blew my mind. It’s funny to think about now.
