This UK wind monopile factory will create 2,000+ jobs, become world’s largest
The UK is constructing the world’s largest monopile factory, and it’s poised to create over 2,000 new jobs.
Monopiles are steel tubes driven into the seabed that serve as the foundation for offshore wind turbines and support their weight and wind loads.
The SeAH Wind Monopile Factory in Teesworks, spanning a vast 90-acre site, will produce monopiles weighing up to 3,000 tons. The construction phase will generate 1,500 jobs, with an additional 750 positions once the factory becomes fully operational in 2026.
Steelmaker SeAH owns the factory, and it’s working with structural steel company Severfield UK and Belgian heavy lifting company Sarens (which is deploying 19 cranes, pictured), among others, to build it.
The factory’s strategic agreements with leading offshore wind power companies, including a notable partnership with Ørsted, mean steady product demand. Ørsted is set to become the first and primary customer for the monopile foundations manufactured at the UK facility.
South Korea’s SeAH announced its investment in the world’s largest monopile factory on the south bank of the River Tees in 2022. Teesworks is described as Europe’s largest brownfield site.
