Tipperary’s Ben Coen rides Hanalia, owned by the Aga Khan, to glory in the maiden on Sunday
It has been a serious racing week for Tipperary interest in the game, with Fethard’s Ben Coen in particular shining from Monday to Sunday.
Ben Coen teamed up with his boss Johnny Murtagh to win the one mile four furlong handicap at Roscommon on Monday with Sixpack. The Any Excuse For A Holiday Syndicate owned 10/3 chance led two furlongs out before going clear to win one-and-three-quarter lengths.
Jake Coen partnered the Peter Fahey trained Makfils to a 10/1 success in the two mile handicap hurdle at Punchestown on Tuesday. Owned by the Ashford Syndicate, the gelding led on the run-in, going on to win by four lengths.
Andrew Slattery introduced a smart juvenile in the shape of Powerful Nation who made a winning debut in the 5f maiden at Cork on Tuesday. Owned by the Kevin Sean Tommy Walsh Partnership, the 5/2f quickened up nicely to win by a head under the trainer’s son of the same name.
Rachael Blackmore partnered the Henry De Bromhead trained Mayor’s Walk to win the two mile three furlong beginners chase at Limerick on Thursday. Sent off 6/1, the Stephen McCarthy trained mare stayed on strongly from three out to win by one-and-three-quarter lengths.
Andrew Slattery made all the running aboard the Andy Oliver trained Orchidaceae to win the opening 6f juvenile maiden at the Curragh on Friday. Despite being sent off a 50/1 outsider, the Team Valor International LLC owned filly ran out a comfortable one-and-a-half length winner. Billy Lee also made all on the Paddy Twomey trained Super Sox to win the seven furlong maiden on the same card. Owned by Dowager Countess Of Harrington, the 85/40 chance stayed on well to prevail by two lengths.
The Aidan O’Brien trained Henri Matisse led close home under Ryan Moore to win the opening six furlong maiden at the Curragh on Saturday. Sent off 11/8f, the Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Merriebelle Irish Farm Limited owned colt got home by a short head from Cadogan.
O’Brien and Moore competed a double when 7/2 chance Jan Brueghel won the concluding one mile two furlong maiden. Owned by Westerberg, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, the colt beat Ozark Daze by eight lengths.
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore won the opening six furlong maiden at the Curragh on Sunday with Heavens Gate. Sent off 2/1, the Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier owned filly had two-and-a-quarter lengths in hand of stablemate January. O’Brien later combined with Wayne Lordan to win the Group 2 one mile two furlong stakes with Chief Little Rock.
The 11/4 chance made all in the colours of Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith to win by three-and-three-quarter lengths. Ben Coen was also amongst the winners on the afternoon, riding Hanalia to win the one mile two furlong maiden for Johnny Murtagh.
Owned by the Aga Khan, the 11/2 chance stayed on inside the final furlong to beat Lily Hart one-and-a-quarter lengths.
