Like John Denver, Rory McIlroy was leaving on a jet plane. And like John Denver, we didn’t know when he’d be back again.

Seven minutes after Bryson DeChambeau’s putt to win the US Open last Sunday evening, McIlroy was driving his SUV out of the car park of the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina. At 7.29pm local time his personal Gulfstream 5 was taking off from a nearby airfield, destination Florida and home.
