Tottenham confirm second summer transfer with Werner buy option explained

Timo Werner will remain a Tottenham player next season after his loan was extended, the club have confirmed. football.london reported the talks with the German after his six-month stay was set to come to end, and a deal has now been announced.

Having arrived in January on a short-term move from RB Leipzig, Werner will now be a Spurs player until at least June 2025. Tottenham also hold an option to buy him in just over 12 months time for only £8.5million.

Werner came in as cover for a spate of injuries to Ange Postecoglou’s squad and started impressively, contributing to four Premier League goals in his first seven games. He only managed one assist in the two months though and missed the last five games himself through a thigh problem.

Postecoglou did turn to the former Chelsea man consistently when available though. Werner lost just one game in the league that he started – with five ending in wins and three in draws – before Tottenham limped over the line with five losses in their last seven matches.

Despite failing to match the form that had made him one of Europe’s most feared attackers in the Bundesliga, Postecoglou was happy enough for Werner to stick around. “I think from our perspective there’s a deadline there,” he said last week ahead of the end-of-season friendly against Newcastle.

“Again a lot of that will depend on the negotiations between the clubs and how Timo feels,” he said. “Again from my perspective I’m comfortable with that situation and I’ll let the other guys steer it to see what kind of outcome there is.”
