Travel ban lifted for Roscommon woman charged in Dubai with ‘assisted suicide’, Taoiseach says

Taoiseach Simon Harris said a travel ban imposed by Dubai authorities on Irish woman Tori Towey, who was reportedly charged with attempted suicide, has been lifted.

The Irish embassy in UAE will bring her to the airport to travel home as soon as she is ready to do so, the Dáil has heard.

Harris spoke to Towey, the Irish woman who has been charged with attempted suicide and consuming alcohol in the UAE city of Dubai, earlier today.

Speaking to reporters this morning, the Taoiseach provided an update on Tori’s case and said the government is working to bring Towey home.

He said this is his “absolute priority”.

Speaking today, Simon Harris said: “I’ve just been informed that the travel ban has been lifted, that the embassy will take Tori to the airport as soon as she is ready to go and that the embassy, of course, will continue to follow up on the case, which is still active as of now,” Mr Harris told the Irish parliament on Wednesday afternoon.

He thanked the Irish embassy in the United Arab Emirates for its work on the case.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald took to social media to speak of the news, saying that she awaited “her safe return and the ending of this nightmare for her”.
