Travel ban on County Roscommon woman detained in Dubai has been lifted – News – Roscommon Herald
A travel ban on County Roscommon woman Tori Towey, who is reportedly facing charges in Dubai, has been lifted, Taoiseach Simon Harris told the Dáil at lunchtime today, Wednesday.
Ms Towey (28), from the Ballaghaderreen/Boyle area, moved to the city in the United Arab Emirates where she worked for Emirates Airlines and had been prevented from leaving the country as a result of the charges, the Dáil heard on Tuesday.
“The embassy will take Tori to the airport as soon as she is ready to go,” Mr Harris told TDs this lunchtime. “And the embassy will of course continue to follow up the case which is still active as of now. I just wanted to inform the house of that and to thank our embassy,” he said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to Ms Towey, whose case was first highlighted by Dubai Detained, which said it was representing her and her mother.
On Tuesday, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald told the Dáil that Ms Towey had been the victim of domestic violence and was subject to a travel ban over allegations she illegally consumed alcohol and attempted suicide. Attempted suicide is a crime in the Arab state, carrying a sentence of up to six months.
Local Sinn Fein DD Claire Kerrane said that she was “delighted and relieved that Tori will now come home. This is wonderful news after what has been a living nightmare for her and her family. I spoke to Tori and her mother earlier this morning and at that point, nothing had changed but they had noted a big change in engagement and contact from the Embassy once we raised her case. Everyone played their part here and did so to ensure right prevailed – it has. I look forward to seeing Tori come home.”
