UNC Basketball: Incoming freshman reveal their jersey numbers

Earlier in the week, it was revealed that five-star Ian Jackson will wear No. 11 as a member of the UNC basketball program.

Now, we officially know what numbers all three incoming freshman will wear.

Five-star wing Drake Powell confirmed to Inside Carolina that he will wear No. 9 as a Tar Heel. Here’s the explanation that he provided to Sherrell McMillan:

“I’ll be wearing No. 9. I don’t really have an answer why. My cousin, he mentioned it to me one time that Dwyane Wade wore it during the Olympics. And I don’t think anyone has ever worn No. 9 at UNC.”

As for four-star big man James Brown, it appears that he’ll be wearing the No. 2 as a member of the UNC basketball program. Tar Heel fans remember that Elliot Cadeau donned the number as a freshman but elected to switch back to the No. 3 (previously worn by Cormac Ryan) the number he wore during his prep/high school days.

Here’s the updated list of jersey numbers for the UNC basketball program for the 2024-2025 season:

Zayden High – No. 1
James Brown – No. 2
Elliot Cadeau – No. 3
RJ Davis – No. 4
Seth Trimble – No. 7
Drake Powell – No. 9
Ian Jackson – No. 11
Jalen Washington – No. 13
Jae’Lyn Withers – No. 24

Ven-Allen Lubin – TBD

The new Tar Heels have arrived on campus and have begun working out with the team ahead of their first collegiate seasons. Of course, UNC basketball fans are anxious to see them in game action, as at least we now know what number they will be wearing in Carolina Blue.
