Union City golf finishes fourth at regionals, misses state finals cut by two strokes

Quincy finishes 5th, Bronson takes 16th; Union City’s Crance misses state finals cut by one stroke, finishes 7th

SOUTH HAVEN – The Union City Chargers fell just two strokes shy of advancing on to the biggest event in Michigan High School golf, as the Chargers finished in fourth place at Monday’s Division Three Regional 15 tournament held at HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven. 

Union City finished in fourth place as a team at Monday’s event after shooting a team score of 371, just two strokes shy of the third and final qualifying place held by the team from Dowagiac who finished the day with a score of 369. Schoolcraft claimed the regional title after shooting a score of 353, followed by South Haven in second place with a score of 357.  

The Quincy Orioles finished in fifth place overall in the regional with a score of 385 while the Bronson Vikings finished in sixteenth place with a score of 481. 

Union City’s Landyn Crance also suffered a bit of heartbreak in the individual portion of the tournament, finishing a single stroke shy of qualifying for the Michigan High School Athletic Assocation (MHSAA) state finals. Crance led the Chargers with an 18-hole score of 88, good enough for seventh place overall. Springport’s Brody Baum, Crance’s nemesis all season long, finished a single shot ahead of his Big 8 counterpart with a score of 87, claiming the final individual qualifying spot. 

Union City, who won the first Big 8 conference championship in the sport of golf in school history, had three golfers finish inside the top 25, led by Crance, who was then followed by Logan Mears with a 90, placing him in tenth; and Carter Krummrey with a 94, good enough for twenty-fourth place. Rounding out the Charger effort was Jeremy Zehr with a 99, placing him in fortieth; and Blayne Crance who carded a 101, putting him in forty-fifth place. 

Quincy’s fifth place finish was paced by Braylon Estlow who fired off a 93, good enough for eighteenth place overall. Also shooting well for the Orioles was Keegan Neely in twenty-ninth place with a 95; Caleb Bostic with a 98, good enough for thirty-seventh place; Grant Carter in fortieth place with a score of 99; and Isabelle Neely in seventy-first place with a score of 121.  

Bronson’s sixteenth place finish was paced by Carson Norton who fired a 104, good enough for forty-eighth place. Also adding to the Viking effort was Clayton Shortridge in seventy-second place with a 123 and the duo of Aiden Whittaker and Drew Shoup who tied for seventy-seventh place with identical scores of 127. 

South Haven’s Parker Williamson finished in first place overall on the indvidual side with a 76 while Coloma’s Carter Crist finished in second with a 79.

Those qualifying for the next round of play will move on to the MHSAA Division Three State Finals which will take place June 7-8 as athletes battle the Katke Golf Course on the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
